From erinlefey, an excellent point:

I've been fighting for marriage rights for a few years now. I'm wondering why, at this moment. All of you who think that being married means something, this Republican just destroyed it worse than any gay panic could. If someone in Congress disagrees with your medical decision regarding your spouse, they could overrule you. That's one of the KEY marriage issues we've been fighting for on the gay marriage front. A same-sex couple could not take care of each other in a medical crisis.

Turns out opposite-sex couples lost that right today. Sanctity of marriage indeed.

Current Mood: indescribableindescribable

I wouldn't worry about it. The only way they're going to get her out of hospice care is if they kidnap her. Theyr'e just showing off for the conservative public.

Personally, I'm not exactly worried for myself, since I can't get married anyway. We have all sorts of legal documents describing what we do and don't want in a variety of situations already, and have for a long time.

I just like the irony of:

When a reporter queried House Majority Leader Tom DeLay Saturday about that point, he replied, “The sanctity of life overshadows the sanctity of marriage. I don’t know what transpired between Terri and her husband. All I know is Terri is alive…. Unless she has specifically written instructions in her hand, with her signature, I don’t care what her husband says.”

"I don't care what her husband says." It's just such a nice quote.

Thank you for pointing this out to me- I hadn't thought about it.

But hey, let's try looking at the bright side!
Now heterosexual married couples can get fucked over by the desires of one of the parents, regardless of any discussion between a married couple, just like same-sex couples!
See? It's a bold new step in equality!

And that is SO getting metaquoted. Dead on.

Do feel free!

Oh believe me, I did. :) It's FABULOUS. Best quote of the day, easily.

Yeah, I can't get married either. Well, I can technically ('cause the GOD of Abraham, Issac, and G.W. loves me more *pfft*) but there's the problem of securing a groom. Singleness is seen as a desease in this society. Fortunatly, you can't die from it. Sure, you could wind up on a breathing apparatus with a feeding tube in your stomach, but...
