Halloween celebrates Gluttony and Greed.
Thanksgiving celebrates Gluttony and Sloth.
Christmas celebrates Greed and Envy.
Valentine's Day celebrates Lust and Envy.
The Fourth of July celebrates Wrath and Pride.

What does it say about Americans that our secular holidays (yes, I know, some of these have religious roots, but they are secular holidays as well, here) are all about the seven deadly sins?

Yanno, that's pretty cynical. I mean, for me, only Xmas seems to be really about the greed. Just my opinion.

Beleive it or not, I agree with her. I think she's absolutely correct. Despite the origins of the holidays, that is what they have become. This is what they have been popularized as, especially in the last twenty years or so. I don't hear about how good a time a couple had on Valentine's Day - I hear about breakups, affairs, and worse. All people do on Thanksgiving (generally) is pig out and sit around watching TV or talking. Halloween's gotten to the point where its all about gettin' that candy, man.

The only one I don't really agree with is the Fourth, and that's just 'cause its more about the fireworks nowadays than anything else.
