Apropos of nothing in particular

Every time someone asserts that the U.S. was founded by Christians on Christian principles, I want to find a big collection of Jefferson's writings and beat them to death with it.

Just sayin'.

From "Doubt: A History: The Great Doubters and Their Legacy of Innovation from Socrates and Jesus to Thomas Jefferson and Emily Dickinson" by Jennifer Michael Hecht, page 361:

As the second president of the United States, Adams signed into law the Treaty of Tripoli (1797), which declares [that] "the government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion" and is in now way an enemy to Muslims. On this bases "it is declared . . . that no pretext arising from religious opinion shall ever produced an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries." Further, "The United States is not a Christian nation any more than it is a Jewish or a Mohammedam nation." It was carried unanimously by the Senate.

A footnote says "It was written by Joel Barlow, U.S. Consul."

Yeah, no kidding. Morons.

I also take issue with the idea that the founders were totally infallible and its our duty to maintain exactly what they wanted for the country. The fact of the matter is, they were humans, and predominantly rich white guys. And, they can be wrong. If Everything the founding fathers put in (or are alleged to have put in) the government is totally perfect, then why aren't we still only counting 3/5 of black people as population, and why do we let them vote? DURRRRRRRR.

Hey, if you want to print out some selections and buy me a cricket bat or somesuch, I'll screenprint 'em on there for you.

It's the wand of secular governance!

Just tell them the truth, that they were Deists. They founded masonry not Christianity. Enlighten them before you beat them then they can do the same for others. Stop ignornace!
